Mailbag: Anything that helps with easy bruising?
Friday, August 29th, 2008Q: I have a friend that just started bruising easily and often, anything you can recommend?
-Richard
A:
Bruising results from the rupture of the tiniest blood vessels, called capillaries, which allows blood to leak into surrounding tissue until those capillaries are repaired. As the escaped blood is broken down and reabsorbed over the next few days, chemical changes produce the characteristic color changes associated with bruises.
Scientists: Creatine unlikely to cause cramping or dehydration
Friday, August 29th, 2008One still-widely-held misconception about creatine is that it greatly disrupts water metabolism in the body, leading to mild side-effects like cramping or even severe side-effects like dehydration. Many product labels, articles, nutrition experts, even the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) against using creatine when exercising intensely in hot environments.

Mailbag: What’s the Difference Between Echinacea Species?
Thursday, August 28th, 2008Q: Echinacea purpurea vs. Augustifolia Root. Difference in potency? Is the root more potent? What are the differences in effectiveness?
-Larry
A: We’re only aware of a few studies that compared different species. One study compared immune effects of echinacea but failed to show that any one species was the most potent; all tested species (which included angustifolia and purpurea) increased the same immune parameters. Another study compared the antioxidant effects of different echinacea species. That study showed that the chemical composition differed significantly between the purpurea and angustifolia, but that both possessed similar antioxidant properties.
Mailbag: What Carb Blockers Can Do (And Can’t Do)
Thursday, August 28th, 2008Q: I recently purchased 3 bottles of Natrol Carb Intercept & have a couple of questions:
1. Does Phase II stop the digestion of all carbs, (i.e. sugary snacks, candy, etc.), or just starches, (breads, rice, etc.)?
2. Does Phase II inhibit the calories of starches only or does it also inhibit the grams of carbs?
3. Does Phase II work on beer since it is derived from grains? Or does the alcohol just convert to sugar? What about any other alcoholic beverages?
Any other information would be greatly appreciated as I did not receive any information with my delivery.
TS
A: Carb Blockers are a great idea and smart product to keep on hand if you’re trying to lean up. They really aren’t the all-in-one weight loss solution some sources have made them out to be. But, they are still an invaluable resource because they let you eat carb-rich meals without sabotaging your diet and weight loss success.
Greens supplement boosts energy, libido and sexual function
Wednesday, August 27th, 2008Greens supplements are widely used by people to increase their intake of healthy green plant foods, which most most people don’t consume in sufficient amounts. But as beneficial as they are, greens aren’t often used for specific effects on the body, apart from their use by those who believe they can alkalize body chemistry for improved health.

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008Study Affirms Creatine’s Safety
Wednesday, August 27th, 2008More than 10 years after their introduction, creatine supplements are still dogged by the misperception that they are somehow unnatural or unsafe supplements. Like any supplement, creatine is not for everyone. But that’s no excuse to exaggerate its risks. Creatine is a useful, natural nutrient for muscle health and enjoys an excellent safety record, especially when one considers the popularity of creatine supplements, which are used by millions of people on a daily basis. Top Ten Most Overlooked Supplements
Tuesday, August 26th, 2008The supplement industry has enjoyed periods of rapid growth and expansion, not only in terms of sales and market statistics but also in terms of products. There is a constant stream of new supplement products coming onto the market, but for a variety of reasons, some of the most promising supplements fail to attract the attention which their benefits and properties would seem to merit. It can be many years from the time a new supplement is introduced to the time it “catches on” among consumers, doctors, practitioners and the market as a whole. (more…)
