Jack Lalanne’s Favorite Supplements

January 26th, 2011

If you haven’t heard, fitness celebrity Jack Lalanne passed away this past Sunday, January 23rd, at age 96. Jack is best remembered for his many feats of endurance and strength always performed on his birthday, proving that age is truly just a number when compared to grit and relentless determination.

So how did Lalanne stay so fit, so healthy, and live such a long, productive life? Well, it was most likely due to his strict adherence to a natural diet, free from antibiotic-infested meats, processed foods, and other man-made food inventions. Lalanne was often quoted as saying, “If man made it, I won’t eat it.” He lived a mostly vegetarian lifestyle, with the exception of organic eggs and fish, which he ate 7 days a week.

In addition to his strict diet, Lalanne admits to taking between 40-50 different dietary supplements every day. Jack never relied on supplements to cover for poor food choices, rather he took them as an “insurance policy” against any gaps in his diet (as if he had any gaps).

So what supplements did Lalanne take to assist him in living such a healthy, productive lifestyle? Well, Jack was a fan of taking most every vitamin and mineral known to man. I’ve selected a few of Jack’s essential vitamins and minerals to aid in overall health and vitality mentioned in his book, “Revitalize Your Life“:

  1. All Purpose Multivitamin: This bad boy will cover all of your vitamin and mineral bases in one fell swoop.
  2. Vitamin A: Fat soluble vitamin found in some fruits, dark green and orange vegetables. Vitamin A is an antioxidant that aids in preventing cancer, protects the eyes and skin, and lowers the risk of heart disease.
  3. Vitamin C: A big player in maintaining a healthy immune system as well as lowering cholesterol. Vitamin C is known to have a host of positive health effects.
  4. Vitamin D: The body natural produces Vitamin D from exposure to UV rays (i.e. natural and artificial sunshine). It supports a healthy immune system, sexual vitality, and optimal hormone levels. Vitamin D along with Vitamin C are considered two of the most important vitamins in maintaining a healthy, functional body.
  5. Vitamin E: A powerful antioxidant, shown to reduce risk of heart disease. Vitamin E oil has also been shown to aid in the healing of skin when applied topically.
  6. Vitamin K: Helps maintain normal blod clotting. Often found in green leafy veggies.
  7. B-Vitamins: B1 (Thiamin), B2 (Riboflavin), B3 (Niacin), B5 (Panthothenic Acid), B6 (Pyridoxine), and B12 (Cobalamin). All support energy, metabolism, immune system, nervous system function, and much more.
  8. Folic Acid: Helps to increase absorption of the other B-vitamins as well as new production of red blood cells.
  9. Inositol: Essential in the metabolism of dietary fats and cholesterol.
  10. Biotin: Assists in maintaining normal energy levels and a healthy metabolism.
  11. PABA: Imperative in the body’s endogenous formation of folic acid and in protein assimilation.
  12. Choline: Essential in maintaining a healthy cholesterol level.

  1. Calcium: Cme’ on, you know calcium supports strong bones, but did you know it also helps in the regulation of blood pressure and maintenance of a regular heart beat?
  2. Magnesium: One of the most heavily researched and praised minerals, magnesium has shown to be vital in maintenance of healthy skin, a functional nervous system, keeping bones strong and healthy, and even in fighting depression. Woah, hope you’re getting magnesium on the reg.
  3. Phosphorus: Aids in building and maintaning strong bones.
  4. Potassium: Assists cells in the removal of toxins, regulates the body’s water balance, and works to support a healthy blood pressure.

Trace Elements:

  1. Chromium: Aids in the metabolism of basic carbohydrates like sugar and the regulation of sugar in the bloodstream.
  2. Iron: Supports healthy red blood cells.
