Supplements for Longer Life: Resveratrol, Strontium, Vitamin D, and Fish Oil
As more and more people are aiming to live past 100, Dr. Oz decided to look into what supplements could help…his findings: Resveratrol, Strontium, Vitamin D, and Fish Oil.
Resveratrol aims at reducing inflammation of your heart. Inflammation is thought to be one of the main causes of heart disease and heart attacks, because inflammation can cause blood clotting which blocks the blood flow to your heart. Resveratrol combined with an active lifestyle can greatly reduce the chance of heart attacks.
Strontium’s main purpose is to build strong bones, reducing future brittleness. Sounds a whole lot like calcium huh? While calcium is critical in maintaining bone density and strength, strontium actually helps to increase the bone density, preventing breaks and brittleness. According to Dr. Oz, “taking 680 mg of strontium a day (at least four hours after you take your calcium, to prevent interaction) can reduce the risk of bone fractures by 33%.” So don’t leave the calcium out of your diet, but add some strontium to help build those bones back up!
Vitamin D3 is also helpful in forming strong bones, but it may also be key in cancer prevention. Sun is the natural way to intake vitamin D3, but you have to be careful not to overdo it, so supplements are an easy way to make sure skin cancer isn’t a result. Dr. Oz suggests taking 1000IU a day as a way of strengthening your immune cells and protecting your cells and DNA.
Fish oil is a great way to boost your brain activity and enhance your memory. Your brain tissues are mostly composed of the fatty acid DHA so by taking a fish oil supplement you can help protect your brain by boosting new brain cell growth.
