Meal Replacement Drink Mix Overview

Protein powders had already been around a long time when MET-Rx® introduced its Meal Replacement Powder back in 1991, virtually creating a new supplement category overnight. Meal Replacement Powders, as the term suggests, are intended to be used as a substitute for a more traditional type of meal, either for convenience's sake, for the nutritional content or both.

Meal Replacement Powders are nutritionally-fortified protein supplements. Proteins like whey and milk protein aren't good meal replacements because while they do have plenty of protein, they don't supply significant amounts of fat, carbohydrates, vitamins or minerals. These are all essential nutrients and should be consumed at each meal for nutritional balance. But having to add several additional ingredients to a protein shake is inconvenient at best. MET-Rx® Meal Replacement was formulated to be a convenient and complete all-in-one meal replacement, ideal for athletes, dieters or anyone.

For most users, protein is the most important component of a meal replacement formula. MET-Rx® Meal Replacement utilizes a proprietary, doctor-developed blend of whey, milk and egg protein they call METAMYOSIN®. METAMYOSIN® combines fast and slow release proteins along with the superior amino acid profile of egg protein. This is what you'd want in a meal replacement to both fill you up and support muscle growth. Another nice feature of the MET-Rx® Meal Replacement are the 27 vitamins and minerals it supplies, including the full daily value of calcium. There's a modest amount of fat and carbs in MET-Rx® Meal Replacement, just enough to make this a truly complete meal replacement. Go a step beyond protein powders and try a box of MET-Rx® Meal Replacement today.

It is a great product, but buyer beware.

I definitely agree with all the good things that the other reviewer say about this product. I've used Met-Rx for decades and also attest to its benefits. However, I gave it only four stars because I strongly object to the ad's omission of the fact that Met-Rx contains sucralose. Sucralose replaced aspartane---which from its invention at Searle was known to damage brain cells---as the no-calorie sweetner of over whelming choice by food packagers. Regrettably, sucralose is known to kill off our probiotics, the bacteria that enable food's digestion! We all have the right to take our chances. Nevertheless, the vendors of products that they encourage us to eat have the duty to inform of what those chances are.

It has been an invaluable staple of my diet for over 20 years.

I've been consuming (original)vanilla Met-Rx every day for over 20 years. For me, it tastes great and---very important---it dampens my craving for sweets. It provides me with a good daily dose of vitamins and mineral as well as good hit of high quality protein to support my weight lifting routine. In fact I believe I owe my good health and youthful physique in large measure to Met-RX. (FYI: A septuagenaian, I am 6 feet tall and weight 170. My trouser size is 30x32, and I bench 225)

Best Value for MRP

Met-Rx is the originator of the MRP. I've tried different brands and found issues with all of them including: Mixing issues, weird separation of the components of the shake if you let it sit too long, too much/too little fiber, too much/too little protein, too high cholesterol, too much sugar, too many calories, added supplements, etc. Some other brands blast you with 50+ grams of protein, 5+ grams of fiber, and loads of cholesterol. Your stomach might have better fortitude than mine, but that's a bad mix for me. Some even sneak in creatine or thermogenic compounds. Met-Rx strikes the perfect balance for all of this. It's a great base drink on its own, and if I feel I might need some more protein or calories on a given day a tablespoon of peanut butter or whey protein does the trick. They don't add any crap to it, just a good MRP. I'm not fond of the vanilla, but the extreme chocolate and peanut butter are both great.

As the name says, it tastes like cake batter. But how much raw cake batter can one eat before becoming tired of it?

I thought it would be an approximation of cake batter but it is just like it: too sweet and cake-like for me. On the plus side, it was more palatable when very cold (I use cold water - I can't imagine drinking it as thick and more cake-like as milk would make it) and I got through the whole box of 18. In all, not horrible but I won't buy this flavor again. On the other hand, I really like the Met-Rx Extreme Chocolate and buy it repeatedly.
