Stevia Extract Overview

Here's a great alternative to sugar, honey or other high-calorie sweeteners, an 'herbal sweetener' that has zero-calories but tastes sweet. Stevia extract is a natural product, requiring only minimal processing from South American Stevia rebaudiana plants cultivated for this purpose. Stevia extract is sweet but also has a subtle, characteristic flavor that makes it better-suited for some foods and drinks than others. NOW Stevia Extract is terrific in hot or iced tea, and many baking recipes that combine spice and sweetness, like gingerbread and pumpkin pie. Stevia doesn't work as well with bitter/sour tastes so it's not what you want for your coffee or lemon meringue pie. For those recipes we recommend NOW Xylitol. There are many types of stevia products on the market, mainly in liquid and powder form. The quality is highly variable, however. Stevia extracts, like this one from NOW Foods, are definitely the way to go because non-extract products aren't as consistent and the licorice-like stevia taste is much stronger.

Not Being Told

There has to be something in NOW liquid stevia the company is not disclosing because when it dries on the rim of the bottle it is very sticky and that does not happen with the Sweet Leaf brand. I'm disappointed because I thought NOW had a good reputation.

My Long-Term Go-To Sweetener

I ditched sugar years ago at least as my go to sweetener because its linked to cancer. I have been purchasing NOW stevia ever since. I purchase this one because the 8 oz bottle is more economical for me. The powders just dont dissolve correctly and although there is an alcohol free version, it is thick and you have to use a lot more for the same results, so this one is my old reliable. Some say there is a slight aftertaste, but if you use too much you will get that! Start off with just a few drops and add more to taste. I have tried the flavored stevias and I just wasnt impressed because they really do leave a funny aftertaste in my mouth. If I want a flavor, I use this regular stevia and a drop or two of my essential oils doTERRA.

stevia extract

I have been using stevia for over 10 yrs. Love it. this product was suggested to me by a specialty dr. due to the fact that I was addicted heavily to granulated sugar.I was using hugh amts. in my liquids. This product does not require lg. amts. per use.

Trick to adjust the flow thru the oversize dropper cap.

Good stuff at a great price, have been using it for many years. I find that if instead of taking off the security seal under the dropper cap, I simply punch a small hole in it thru the dropper cap with a safety pin or other small sharp point I can more easily and accurately control the amount of sweetener that come out. It is sometime necessary to rinse off the seal if it becomes clogged with evaporated stevia.
