Hormones are biochemicals that serve as important control mechanisms for many vital bodily processes. Estrogen, progesterone, testosterone and DHEA are examples of hormones. Humans produce dozens of different hormones, each controls a specific process or processes. Hormones are produced by specialized cells in glands and organs located throughout the body. Hormones are released directly into the bloodstream where they carried to the target tissues. The cells within target tissues have specialized receptors on their surface into which hormones fit, in a manner similar to how a key fits into a lock.
Among the many functions of hormones is to drive the processes that repair and maintain bodily structures and processes. Hormones play a major role in promoting optimal immune, reproductive, and cognitive function, for example.
Health Benefits of Hormones
Natural production of most hormones declines sometime after the lifetime peak which usually occurs in the mid 20's. Eventually declining hormone levels will become a factor in declining health, unless measures are taken to offset this decline; this is the idea behind physician-prescribed Hormone Replacement Therapy in post-menopausal women. Many hormones are available without a doctor's prescription, however, and many people use them as part of a anti-aging protocol. These include melatonin, progesterone, and DHEA.
