7-keto DHEA (a.k.a. 7-Oxo-Dehydroepiandrosterone, or 7-Oxo-DHEA) is a metabolite of DHEA, a steroid* hormone produced by the adrenal glands. First introduced to the public in 1998, 7-keto DHEA remains a popular dietary supplement for those who wish to receive some of the benefits of DHEA without DHEA’s hormonal implications. Although its exact role in the body is not fully understood, 7-keto DHEA is reputed to have such benefits as increased thermogenic activity, and enhanced memory and immunity.
*"Steroid" in this sense either means made from cholesterol. As natural hormones already present in and manufactured by the body, neither 7-keto nor DHEA should be confused with the 'steroids' that have been the center of controversy in many professional sports.
