Yohimbe
What is Yohimbe?
Yohimbe (Pausinystalia yohimbe) is derived from the bark of an African tree, and contains the active ingredient yohimbine. Yohimbe increases production of the brain chemical norepinephrine, which increases blood flow.
Health Benefits
Although the research is mixed, yohimbe has been used as a treatment for male erectile dysfunction, as it increases blood flow to the penis by boosting norepinephrine levels in the blood.
Usage Indications
Yohimbe is available in capsule, tablet, and liquid form; and by prescription
Yohimbe is not recommended for use by women.
- Side effects: Anxiety, tremors, dizziness, vomiting, increased blood pressure and fast heartbeat may be experienced. Yohimbe may trigger anxiety or panic attacks in prone individuals. Overdose of yohimbe may be deadly – watch out for salivation, enlarged pupils, irregular heartbeat, and low blood pressure. An overdose needs to be treated immediately by emergency medical professionals.
- Indications: Consult your physician before using this product. Yohimbe should not be used by women – especially pregnant women and nursing mothers. Do not use yohimbe in cases of heart disease, kidney or liver problems, ulcers, low blood pressure, high blood pressure, and prostate inflammation. This drug is classified as an MAO inhibitor, and therefore may seriously interact with a number of medications, including anti-depressants and stimulants, as well as foods containing tyramine.
