Ashwaganda, also known as Withania somnifera, is an herb in the nightshade family that has been a part of traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. Often referred to as “Indian Ginseng”, Ashwaganda is used and regarded in much the same way as ginseng– as an adaptogenic herb (one that helps the body adapt to increased physical and/or mental stress).
Health Benefits of Ashwaganda
Ashwaganda is most often used as a general tonic and adaptogenic herb and occasionally as an aphrodisiac, diuretic or brain booster. Studies suggest ashwaganda can lower cortisol levels (a stress marker) and improve energy, sleep and well-being.
