Bromelain
What is Bromelain?
Bromelain is a collective term for proteolytic (protein-digesting) enzymes derived from the pineapple plant.
Health Benefits
Research shows that bromelain may help reduce inflammation and facilitate healing in such situations as: recovery from surgery, wounds, burns, and infections. In addition, bromelain may be beneficial to those suffering from arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. It is also thought that bromelain may help relieve nasal congestion, symptoms of amyloidosis, and even help prevent cancer. More research is necessary to confirm these claims.
Studies show that bromelain also aids digestion, especially in combination with amylase (an enzyme that helps digest starchy carbohydrates) and lipase (an enzyme that breaks down fat), and have possible anti-diarrheal properties. Again, more research is necessary.
