What is Chromium?
Chromium is one of several trace minerals essential to the human diet. 'Trace minerals' are so named because they're only required in small, trace amounts compared to other minerals like magnesium, phosphorus and calcium which are required in gram quantities. Chromium is used to support the function of insulin in the body, with beneficial effects possible for energy, weight-loss, or blood sugar disorders like diabetes and hypoglycemia. Because chromium is poorly supplied by most diets, and because the products are so affordable, chromium supplements are very popular.
About Chromium Supplements
The chromium in supplements is often in the form of niacin-bound chromium, also known as GTF chromium or chromium polynicotinate. Another common form used in supplements is chromium picolinate. Evidence has not conclusively shown that one is superior to the other, and both are about the same in cost. For more information about chromium supplements please see the sections on chromium picolinate
and GTF chromium
