Coenzyme Q-10

Coenzyme Q 10: Information

Coenzyme Q 10 (a.k.a. CoQ 10, Q 10, vitamin Q, ubiquinone) is structurally similar to vitamin E and found in high concentrations in the brain, heart, muscle, liver, kidney, and pancreatic tissue. CoQ-10 plays a vital role in the production of cellular energy and also functions as a protective antioxidant.1 The body's ability to synthesize CoQ-10 declines throughout life, however, and CoQ-10 supplements have thus become a very popular way to support overall health vitality through the aging process.

CoQ-10: Health Benefits

CoQ-10's benefits stem from its role as an antioxidant and as a cofactor in cellular energy production. Its powerful lipid antioxidant properties benefit those with high cholesterol by protecting LDL cholesterol from oxidation.2 CoQ-10 is also vital to all cells with very high energy requirements such as those in the brain, immune system and particularly in the heart muscle.

How CoQ-10 Helps Create Energy

Within most cells of the body are structures called mitochondria upon which the cells depend for energy. Mitochondria use CoQ-10 to enable the oxidation of energy-rich fatty acids. CoQ-10 is therefore especially important to the heart muscle which depends on fatty acids for 2/3 of its energy requirement, more than any other part of the body.

Using CoQ-10

Dosages vary based upon reason for using CoQ-10. 100 mg. per day is often recommended for general health. Higher amounts have been used experimentally for certain conditions. CoQ-10 is fat-soluble, and should be taken with food containing fat or fat-based supplements like fish oil.

Side-effects and Cautions:

CoQ-10 rarely produces any side-effects. Mild insomnia, rashes and nausea have been reported in some individuals. Pregnant/nursing women should not use coenzyme Q-10, as it has not been proven safe for this population. Do not use this supplement as therapy for medical conditions. Drugs that lower cholesterol or blood sugar may inhibit the effect of CoQ 10. CoQ-10 may interfere with the body’s response to prescription medication.
