What is Egg Protein?
Egg protein commonly refers to the protein contained in chicken eggs, either in the form of a whole egg, egg albumen (egg white), or as part of a liquid or powder protein supplement. This type of protein is of high quality, balanced in amino acids, and is fairly inexpensive.
A large whole egg contains 75 calories, 5 grams of fat and 6 grams of protein, as well as 13 vitamins and minerals. The egg albumen itself is mostly protein (3.5 grams), with 17 calories, a negligible amount of fat, and some nutrients. Protein supplement formulas may be based on whole eggs or egg albumen. The main difference between the two is calorie-to-protein ratio, fat content and nutrient content.
Health Benefits
Egg protein can be a good supplement to a healthy diet. Eggs have a high vitamin and mineral content, and are one of the few foods that naturally contain vitamin D. Though most of the nutrients are contained in the egg yolk, eggs whites are high in protein and contain none of the yolk’s fat or cholesterol.
