GABA
What is GABA?
GABA, or gamma amino butyric acid, is an amino acid manufactured in the brain that acts as a natural tranquilizer. GABA is a neurotransmitter, and sufficient amounts are normally produced by the body, but outside factors such as a poor diet may cause the body to produce lower levels.
Health Benefits
GABA acts as a gentle non-addictive sedative, helping to ease anxiety and stress, which may help promote better sleep. GABA may also help alleviate depression, help in the treatment of epilepsy/seizures, and may help treat chronic pain. GABA may also be helpful in easing mood swings associated with PMS.
Some research has suggested that gamma amino butyric acid may help reduce body fat levels and improve exercise performance. More research is needed.
Usage Indications
Use as directed. GABA should be taken between meals on an empty stomach to ensure proper absorption. Store in a cool, dry place.
GABA is available in tablet, capsule, and powder form.
- Side effects: May cause mild gastrointestinal upset. Excessive dosages and/or prolonged use may exacerbate anxiety and insomnia, and may cause numbness or tingling in the extremities.
- Indications: Pregnant/nursing women, children, or individuals with kidney disease, liver disease, or individuals taking prescription anxiety medication should not use GABA except under the direction of a physician. Use extreme caution when combining GABA with other medications that have a tranquilizing effect, such as muscle relaxants, antidepressants, and alcohol. Do not operate heavy machinery until you are aware of how GABA affects your body.
