What is Magnesium?
Magnesium is an essential mineral necessary for many important biological functions. Magnesium is involved in the production of energy, protein synthesis, muscle contraction, nerve conduction, and the activation of enzymes. The mineral is particularly important for the heart, muscles, kidneys, teeth and bones.
Deficiency
Magnesium deficiency is characterized by anxiety, nausea, irregular heart beat, insomnia, seizures and other symptoms. Those most prone to deficiency are individuals suffering from bowel diseases, diabetes, pancreatitis, hyperthyroidism, kidney disorders, HIV disease, or excessive diuretic use.

Low levels of magnesium are associated with asthma, emphysema, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children and teens, type II diabetes, fibromyalgia, heart disease, high blood pressure, infertility, miscarriage, osteoporosis, migraines, and stroke.
Studies have shown that magnesium taken with calcium may enhance calcium absorption in menopausal women, helping to prevent bone loss. Magnesium has also been shown to help treat or prevent seizures associated with eclampsia, help alleviate symptoms of PMS, and help alleviate insomnia caused by restless legs syndrome.

Consult your physician before using any dietary supplements if you are currently taking any medications, as magnesium may interact with other medications or drugs you are taking. Magnesium has been known to interact with antibiotics, blood pressure medications, calcium channel blockers, diabetic medications, digoxin, diuretics, hormone replacement therapy for menopause, levothyroxine, penicillinamine, tiludronate and alendronate. Individuals with kidney disease should not take magnesium supplements except under strict medical supervision.
