What is Vitamin B-5 (Panthothenic Acid)?
Vitamin B-5 (a.k.a. pantothenic acid) is part of the group of B-vitamins which also includes biotin, choline, folic acid, inositol, vitamin B-1, vitamin B-2, vitamin B-3, vitamin B-6 and vitamin B-12. Vitamin B-5 can be found in avocado, nuts, brown rice, broccoli, and dairy foods, and is also synthesized by friendly bacteria within the body.
Vitamin B-5 is involved in a variety of biological processes, including the production of energy, and the synthesis of fatty acids, hormones, and the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Pantothenic acid is also involved in the metabolism of amino acids and fatty acids.
Deficiency
Vitamin B-5 deficiency is rare, and in most cases is caused by extreme malnutrition. Sufficient amounts of B-5 are usually consumed through a healthy diet.
Health Benefits
In addition to being necessary for good health, B-5 has been shown to have other benefits. Studies have shown pantothenic acid to be highly effective in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. In addition, B-5 is being studied for its role in helping to treat hepatitis A. More research is needed.
