Vitex: Information
The herb vitex is also known as chasteberry or chaste tree. The botanically name of the herb is Vitex agnus-castus. Vitex is native to the Mediterranean region but has been cultivated in other regions with warm, mild climates.
Vitex' long history of use as a medicinal herb is most closely associated with the male and female reproductive systems, where it is considered to have both tonifying (strengthening) and regulating effects.
Vitex: Health Benefits
Vitex has been used to enhance libido in both sexes and is a common ingredient in many sexual health formulas. Other uses for vitex include support for PMS-symptoms1 and menopause.2 Vitex is chemically complex. Compounds known as flavonoid glycosides are among the probable active ingredients in vitex. Research has shown that extracts of these compounds effect hormone levels.3
Using Vitex Supplements
Use vitex products as directed. Check with your doctor if you have questions about your hormone levels, or whether hormone levels are related to any health problem you ma be experiencing.
Side-effects and Cautions:
Use vitex supplements as directed and read labels thoroughly. The most common side-effects are nausea, headache, GI disturbances, menstrual disorders, acne, itching and rash.
