Chondroitin Sulfate
What is Chondroitin Sulfate?
Chondroitin sulfate is part of a large protein molecule called protecglycan, helping to give cartilage elasticity. Naturally occurring in the human body, it is also widely available in supplement form derived from animal cartilage, shark cartilage, or cow trachea. Chondroitin sulfate is most often accompanied in supplement form with glucosamine, a form of amino sugar that also plays a role in cartilage health.
Health Benefits
Taken in conjunction with glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate may provide relief from joint pain and discomfort. People with mild-to-moderate osteoarthritis may also experience pain relief and slowing of cartilage deterioration by supplementing with chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine.
Usage Indications
Recommended dosage: 1200 mg, usually in conjunction with 1500mg glucosamine, taken daily.
Chondroitin sulfate-glucosamine supplements are available in tablet, liquid, and powder form.
- Side effects: Those supplementing with chondroitin sulfate-glucosamine may experience an increase in intestinal gas, and soft stools.
- Indications: Pregnant/nursing women and children should not use a chondroitin sulfate-glucosamine supplement, as not enough research has been conducted to prove these supplements are safe for these individuals. Chondroitin sulfate is similar to the blood thinner heparin, and should be used under strict physician supervision if taking any blood thinners.
