Fiber
What is Fiber?
Dietary fiber is found in the walls of plant cells, and is not digestible to humans, though it is still a very important component in a balanced diet. Most abundant in whole, plant-based foods, there are two kinds of fiber: soluble and insoluble.
Soluble fiber attracts water and forms a gel-like consistency in the digestive tract, slowing the rate of digestion. Absorption of certain nutrients, such as sugar or starchy foods is slowed and even lowered. Soluble fiber is found in the soft part of fruits, peas, oats, barley, etc.
Insoluble fiber, a natural laxative, adds bulk to the stool and speeds it through the gastrointestinal tract. Insoluble fiber is found in fruit peels, vegetables, whole-grain cereals, etc.
Health Benefits
Research shows that adequate consumption of soluble fiber may lower cholesterol levels over time, prevent heart disease and lower the risk of stroke. Soluble fiber may also improve glucose tolerance in those with diabetes. More studies are needed.
Adequate consumption of dietary fiber may help treat and/or prevent the following conditions: gastrointestinal disease, constipation, hemorrhoids, high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure. More studies are needed.
Usage Indications
General adult recommended daily intake of fiber: 25-35 grams daily
Supplemental fiber is available in tablet, capsule, and powder form, and should always be taken with a full glass of water.
Consult your physician before using any fiber supplement.
- Side effects: May cause gas and bloating. Use of fiber supplement may slow or reduce the absorption of certain medications.
- Indications: There are no established intake guidelines for children. Children in need of more fiber should be given a gradually increasing amount of dietary fiber from foods on the advice of a physician. Dietary fiber has been shown to interact with the following: tricyclic anti-depressant medications, diabetes medications, carbamazepine, cholesterol-lowering medications, digoxin, lithium, and penicillin. Consult your physician.
