What are Omega-9 Fatty Acids?
Omega-9 fatty acids (or oleic acid) are monounsaturated fatty acids found in foods such as olive and canola oils. Although omega-9 fatty acids help support good health, they are not essential and can be made in the body. Essential fatty acids (omega-3 and omega-6), in contrast, must be obtained in the diet.
The body uses fatty acids to help synthesize certain hormones and hormone-like substances, provide structure for cell membranes, support natural growth, and to provide energy if necessary.
Health Benefits
Monounsaturated fatty acids may help improve heart health and lower the risk of cardiovascular disease if used to replace saturated fats in the diet. These fats act to lower dangerous LDL cholesterol levels and discourage plaque build-up in the arteries.
