Enzymes act as catalysts for almost every type of chemical reaction within the body (a catalyst is a substance that facilitates a chemical reaction). Enzymes consist mainly of proteins and minerals, and their actions often require the presence of certain vitamins. There are hundreds of enzymes being made and used by the body on a continual basis. Each enzyme is very specific in its purpose. Similarly, each type of enzyme supplement is also specific in its purpose as well.
There are two main categories of enzymes available as dietary supplements: digestive and systemic. Digestive enzymes support digestive functions, with particular enzymes helping to digest certain types of foods:
Systemic enzymes may include some of the same enzymes found in digestive enzymes, but are usually taken without food to support a wide range of processes including healthy circulation and inflammation control.
