Vitamin D-3 (2,000IU) Description from Kirkman
You have probably noticed that vitamin D has been getting a lot of press lately in the media and health journals. It is well-known and established that vitamin D is necessary for supporting strong bones and teeth. It is also established that vitamin D is necessary for good absorption of certain minerals.
Our best source of vitamin D has always been sunshine; however, the use of sunscreen can limit the amount of vitamin D actually absorbed from the sun. Cloudy, rainy climates also add limitations. Cod liver oil can also be a good source, though you have to read the label to be sure. All cod liver oils are not the same.
Individuals who do not get sufficient sun exposure and do not take cod liver oil have to resort to fortified foods for their vitamin D intake. Cereals and dairy products are fortified adequately, but individuals on a GF/CF diet will miss out on much of that fortification. Check your food labels to determine whether they contain vitamin D.
In 2008, the American Academy of Pediatrics doubled the recommended dose of vitamin D for infants, adolescents and adults to 400 IU daily. Recent research is now suggesting that many children and adults are still not getting enough vitamin D for maintaining good health. This research is suggesting that many other health conditions in addition to healthy bones and teeth may be very vitamin D-3 dependent. Kirkman recommends looking up this recent research on the Internet so you can determine if you and your family may need to supplement with additional vitamin D.
