Sports Nutrition

Sport Nutrition encompasses a wide variety of products designed to increase athletic performance, speed up recovery times, and improve overall physique. A good sports nutrition program can also provide athletes with added strength, agility, endurance, mental sharpness, and a positive state-of-mind.

Protein is the building block of lean muscle tissues. Athletes and bodybuilders must ingest adequate amounts protein to sustain muscle mass. Endurance athletes and weight lifters engaged in strenuous resistance training have much higher protein needs than non-exercisers. A general guideline for daily protein intake is listed below.*

• For general health – 1 gram of protein per pound of ideal body weight.*

• For athletes and fitness enthusiasts – 1.5 grams of protein per pound of ideal body weight.*

• For bodybuilders – 2-3 grams of protein per pound of ideal body weight.*

Pre-workout supplements are typically taken 30-45 minutes before workouts and contain ingredients that contribute to a more powerful and effective training experience. The goal of any quality pre-workout supplement should be to increase motivation, energy, pumps, strength, explosiveness, and to stimulate higher training intensity. Alternatively, post-workout formulas are taken after a strenuous workout to aid with muscle growth and recovery.*

Amino Acids are components of protein that aid in the growth and repair of muscle tissue and prevent muscle catabolism (muscle wasting) during intense training. Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) possess an unusually high potential for muscle repair and growth. Research suggests that BCAAs are the most bioavailable amino acids in terms of building and protecting muscle mass.*

Creatine is a nitrogenous acid that is essential for supplying energy to muscle cells. Creatine helps pull extra water into muscle cells, making them appear fuller and denser. The results of creatine supplementation are increased performance, improved endurance, and faster recovery times.*

Other popular sports nutrition products include tribulus terrestris, an herb that has been studied for its effects on testosterone production, ZMA, a natural mineral supplement that supports muscle recovery, and HMB, a potent amino acid metabolite that has been shown to prevent catabolism (muscle wasting).*
