Flaxseed oil is derived from flaxseeds from the Linium usitatissimum plant. The oil has a rich, nutty flavor and is highly regarded for its healthful properties. Flaxseed oil is a good source of protein, potassium, boron, and beta carotene. Most notably, the oil contains an ideal balance of alpha-linolenic acid (or ALA , an omega-3 fatty acid), and linolenic acid (an omega-6 fatty acid), as well as healthy lignans. ALA is vital for the proper function of nerves, cell membranes, cell tissues and prostaglandins.
Studies have shown flaxseed oil is effective in helping lower cholesterol and blood pressure and helping to reduce inflammation. The oil has also been shown in studies to significantly reduce the development of atherosclerosis and heart disease due to reduction of blood platelet accumulation. Studies are currently being conducted to determine the role of flaxseed oil in helping to treat some hormone-related cancers. The lignans in the oil may help block the effects of estrogen, which may aggravate certain cancers.
Flaxseed oil is available in capsule or liquid oil form. Flaxseed oil is very easily broken down by heat, light and oxygen, and should be refrigerated. The oil may be used to help flavor foods, but should not be used in sautéing as direct contact with heat will cause the oil to lose its beneficial properties.
